Development of Village Health Volunteers Participation Model in promoting Health Behaviors of Pre-Ageing Population in Phichit Province

The pre-ageing population is on the rise. A model for promoting the participation of village health volunteers (VHVs) in promoting healthy behaviors among pre-ageing individuals should be developed for healthier older adults. This was participatory action research using a mixed-methods approach. The sample included 412 VHVs, 18 partner organizations, and VHVs from two pilot sub-districts. Data was analyzed using stepwise multiple regression, paired t-test, and content analysis. The research findings revealed that VHVs had a moderate level of participation (60.0%). Factors influencing and predicting the level of participation included social support, attitudes, and health literacy (R2 adj = 0.402). The developed models for promoting participation included: 1) establishing a support agreement through the Phichit Provincial Health Committee; 2) declaring the policy as a provincial agenda; 3) developing VHV capacity through refresher training; 4) providing VHVs with appropriate social support and incentives; 5) promoting health literacy among VHVs; 6) improving communication and public relations; 7) coordinating efforts to promote VHV participation; and 8) promoting activities or forums for knowledge exchange. The average scores for social support, attitudes, health literacy, and participation after the intervention were significantly higher than before (p < 0.05). Recommendations: Other districts and sub-districts should follow this pre-ageing plan through the Phichit Provincial Health Committee.
