Effectiveness of Dental Sealant Models among Primary School Students in Takua Thung District Health Care Network, Phang Nga Province

Abstract
This cross-sectional research on effectiveness of the dental sealant service models among primary school students within the Takua Thung district health care network, Phang Nga province aimed to investigate the dental sealant service models affecting sealant retention and to determine the prevalence of dental caries among primary school students in Takua Thung district, Phang Nga province, at a 1-year follow-up after application. The study samples were 255 primary school students who received dental sealants in 2023. A total of 595 teeth were evaluated for sealant retention and examined for dental caries. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test.
The results revealed that regarding sealant retention at 1-year, partial loss was the most prevalent at 77.30%, followed by complete loss at 14.30%. The service model at Sub-district Health Promoting Hospitals lacking a permanent dental nurse, which relied on rotating dental nurses, was significantly associated with sealant retention (p-value < 0.05). Furthermore, the occurrence of dental caries was significantly associated with the characteristics of sealant retention (p-value < 0.05). Notably, the service model provided by dentists at the Takua Thung Hospital Dental Clinic showed the highest rate of dental caries occurrence at 58.70%. Therefore, continuous monitoring and evaluation, along with further studies on related factors, are recommended.
