Development of a Natural Latex Foam Model for Nursing Students’ Injection Skills

Abstract

The development of injection skills is an essential competency for nursing students, which requires the use of simulation model that are realistic and appropriate
for practice. This research aimed to 1) study the problems and needs for injection skill training model, 2) develop simulation model from a natural latex foam, 3) compare injection skills before and after using the natural latex foam simulation model, and 4) assess satisfaction with the use of the natural latex foam simulation model. The sample consisted of instructors, staff, and nursing students, divided into a focus group of 10 participants and a group of 45 participants for trial use of the natural latex foam simulation model. The research instruments included the developed simulation model, a quality assessment form, an injection skill assessment form, and a satisfaction assessment form, all of which were validated. Data were analyzed using content analysis, mean, standard deviation, and paired samples t-test. The problems found that the practical teaching and learning in the nursing practice course had several limitations. The needs for injection skill training model could be summarized into the REAL:L framework, consisting of Re-use, Easy, Affordable, Long-lasting, and Look-like. The developed simulation model had characteristics similar to human skin, with elasticity and a soft touch. The overall quality was at a very good level (M = 4.59, S.D. = 0.51). Injection skills after using the natural latex foam simulation model (M = 4.38, S.D. = 0.61) were significantly higher than before use (M = 4.20, S.D. = 0.63) (p < 0.001), and overall satisfaction was at a good level. Therefore, this simulation model can be used as a tool to develop injection skills and enhance nursing students’ confidence in real practice.
