Development of Nursing Practice Guidelines for Preoperative Patient Care Preparedness at Chiang Yuen Hospital MahaSarakham Province

This action research aimed to (1) study the situation of preoperative patient care preparedness at Chiang Yuen Hospital, Maha Sarakham Province, (2) develop nursing practice guidelines for preoperative patient care, and (3) evaluate the effectiveness of the developed guidelines. The study participants consisted of 10 registered nurses working in the operating room and patients undergoing surgery, selected by purposive sampling. Research instruments included a personal information questionnaire, a nurse satisfaction questionnaire, a preoperative nursing practice assessment form, and a nursing outcome record form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics: percentage, mean, and standard deviation.
The results revealed that (1) the main problems in preoperative preparation were the lack of specific knowledge and systematic nursing guidelines; (2) the developed nursing practice guidelines consisted of five components: patient preparation, preoperative visiting and anesthesia preparation, psychological support, information transfer among multidisciplinary teams, and patient preparation on the day of surgery; and (3) after implementation, nurses’ performance scores increased in all areas—for instance, patient preparation improved from 76% to 98%, and psychological support improved from 86% to 100%. Nurse satisfaction toward the guidelines was at the highest level ( = 4.60, SD = 0.52). Regarding nursing outcomes, postoperative complications decreased from 4.88% to 0%, surgical postponements declined to 2.44%, and there were no incidents of wrong-patient, wrong-site, or wrong-procedure surgery.
In conclusion, the development of nursing practice guidelines for preoperative patient care preparedness was effective in enhancing patient safety, reducing surgical errors, and strengthening the quality of nursing care within the context of a community hospital.
