Nursing Care of Pregnant Women with Preeclampsia during Labor: 2 case studies

Abstract

Pre-eclampsia is a disease in the group of high blood pressure during pregnancy. It is found in pregnant women who are more than 20 weeks pregnant. This disease is a very severe symptom group and often causes of death of both pregnant women and their fetuses.

The purpose of this study was to study the effective nursing care for pregnant women with preeclampsia during labor by comparing the differences between two pregnant women with the same disease who were admitted to the delivery room at Kantharawichai Hospital on September 1, 2021 and on March 28, 2022. Functional health patterns of Gordon and inpatient medical record were reviewed. Nursing cares, providing based on nursing process, were compared

The results showed that the first case was forty years old woman with second pregnancy with 37⁺² weeks of gestation. She had high blood pressure, abnormal laboratory, decreased fetal heart rate, and no progress of labor. Therefore, she was referred to Maha Sarakham Hospital for proper treatment. The second case was a fifteen years old woman with 35^{+ 5} weeks and was first pregnancy. She had severe high blood pressure. She received anti convulsion. The obstetrician considered to terminate pregnancy by normal delivery. The second case was referred to Maha Sarakham Hospital by using the express lane system because of  preterm infant.

From the study it was found that two patients were diagnosed with the same disease but with different severity and complexity of care. Proper and holistic nursing care specifically provided for each individual could promote recovery. Finally, both cases were discharged from the hospital safely.
