Extracorporeal Shock Wave therapy for Chronic Plantar Heel Pain

Abstract
Abstract: A trial was performed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) for chronic plantar heel pain. Thirty-seven chronic plantar heel pain patients (39 heels) with a previously unsuccessful conservative treatment of at least 6 months were randomized into 2 groups. The treatment group (group A) were treated with 1,500 shock waves and the controlled group (group B) was received placebo treatment. All patients were evaluated for the results of treatment with the 10 cm visual analog scale (VSA) for their pain at first step, of the day at rest period, at work and on local pressure before and 1, 3, 6 and 12 weeks after treatment and complications following the treatment.
There was no statistically significant differences of baseline characteristics of patients between of group A and good B. After performing analysis of variance, there was statistically significant difference in pain between at first step before and at 12th week in group A, pain at work before, at 6th week and at 12th week in group B. There was no statistically significant difference in pain at rest period, on local pressure between group A and group B. There was no serious complication in groups.
