Abstract

Crush syndrome is a group of signs and symptoms resulted from severe crush injury. It is manifest by hernodynamic instability, shock, hyperkalemia and subsequent renal failure. It has a high mortalty rate. The difficulty in arriving at the early diagnosis and prompt therapy constituted the high mortality associated with this condition. We retrospectively studied 22 victims who were suffered crush injuries from prolonged limb compression in the incident of collapse bulding at Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand on 13 th. August 1993. The purpose of the study was to evaluate type of injury and risk factors associated with severe crush injuries. Three groups of the patient were classified according to the severity of the injury and outcome of treatment. This study indicated that patient whose limb was compressed for a prolong period of time, rapidly swelling of the involved limb after relieving of the compression and had visible myoglobinuria will subsequently develop severe crush syndrome.
