Abstract

Abstract Many caregivers of persons with palliative care are at risk of developing depressive symptoms. However, there are few studies focusing on this topic in Khuntan district

Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with depressive disorder in caregivers of palliative care patients in Khuntan district, Chiang Rai province.

Methods. The sample consisted of 46 caregivers of palliative care patients. Data were collected through questionnaires that included general information, income, sleep patterns, workload, and patient behavior. Depression was assessed using the 2Q questionnaire. The risk factors for depressive disorder in caregivers were analyzed using both univariate logistic regression and multiple logistic regression to identify the factors influencing the risk of depressive disorder in

Palliative care caregivers.

Results Female caregivers had a higher risk of depressive disorder than male caregivers, with 71.43% of women at risk compared to 28.57% of men, though this difference was not statistically significant (p-value = 0.33). Caregivers with chronic diseases had a higher risk of depression (OR = 9.99, 95% CI: 1.90-52.55, p-value = 0.007). Those with sufficient income but no savings had an increased risk (OR = 34.71, 95% CI: 1.48-809.60, p-value = 0.02), as did caregivers who slept less than 5 hours per day (OR = 5.25, 95% CI: 1.18-23.27, p-value = 0.03). Furthermore, caregivers who felt burdened had a significantly increased risk of depression (OR = 15, 95% CI: 2.54-88.39, p-value = 0.003). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that caregivers with sufficient income but no savings were significantly more likely to experience depression (Adjusted OR = 25.44, 95% CI: 1.07-600.40, p-value = 0.04).

Conclusions and recommendations This study highlights the importance of addressing the mental health of palliative care caregivers, particularly focusing on financial support, adequate rest, and physical health, all of which significantly influence the risk of depressive disorder. These findings can inform the development of care plans and support measures aimed at reducing mental health risks and improving the long-term quality of life for caregivers.
