Evaluation of Dengue Surveillance System of Doiloung Hospital, Chiang Rai Province, 2023

Abstract

ABSTRACT

            In 2023, Doi Luang District, Chiang Rai Province, recorded 31 cases of hemorrhagic fever, comprising 24 cases of Dengue Fever and 7 cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, with an incidence rate of 214.25 per 100,000 population, exceeding the median rate of the past 5 years. The outbreak was noted in August 2023, with 11 cases reported, primarily in Nong Pa Kao sub-district, accounting for 10 cases. A study was conducted to assess the disease reporting process of the Dengue Fever surveillance system at Doi Luang Hospital, using a Cross-sectional Descriptive Study design. The study encompassed data from the Dengue Fever surveillance reporting system of  Doi Luang Hospital and 506 other hospitals, comparing the period from January 1 to December 31, 2023.

The findings revealed that quantitatively, the surveillance system demonstrated a sensitivity of 92% and a positive predictive value of 95.83%. The completeness of reporting was 96%, with a timeliness rate of 100% in reporting patients. Qualitatively, the system was deemed user-friendly, adaptable, widely accepted by personnel and relevant departments, with system reliability. Recommendations include providing medical staff with clear definitions of Dengue Fever/Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever reporting to ensure more accurate diagnosis and communicating surveillance definitions to relevant personnel, especially before outbreaks, to increase awareness and coverage of both confirmed and suspected cases. Additionally, enhancing the accuracy and completeness of data recording in medical records is advised.
