Results of Esophagogastroduodenoscopy for Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding Sikhiu Hospital Nakhon Ratchasima

Abstract

Background: Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a common and important emergency condition in general practice because of its high mortality rate, 10-14 %. Objective: To evaluate causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients at Sikhiu Hospital, Nakorn Ratchasima. Method: A retrospective descriptive study of the computerized medical record and operative note of the patients who presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and under the upper gastrointestinal endoscopy during January 2014 to September 2016. Result: There were 255 patients, consisting of 176 males (69.0%) and 79 females (31.0%). The mean age was 59 years, range 20-85 years. The three common causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding were gastric ulcer (45.5%), hemorrhagic gastritis (20.8%) and esophageal varices (9.0%). The biopsy was performed among 54 cases with abnormal mucosal patterns (21.2%). The pathologic results were gastritis (77.8%), malignancy (22.2 %). Conclusion: Gastric ulcer was the major cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in Sikhiu hospital. The upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is a safe and useful procedure and it should be done as the primary diagnostic approach in patients presenting with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
