Thrombocytopenia in iron deficiency anemia

Abstract
Introduction: The platelet count is usually normal in the patients with iron deficiency anemia. Thrombocytopenia is rarely reported. This study was aimed to review the patients with iron deficiency anemia co-incidentally with thrombocytopenia. Patients and Methods: The retrospective study recruited the patients with iron deficiency anemia in the department of medicine, Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital in 2014-2015. The inclusion criteria: Hb <12 g% in females and <13 g% in males, ferritin <15 ng/ml, platelet <100,000/mm3 Results: From 110 patients with iron deficiency anemia, there were 15 patients, 1 male and 14 females, having thrombocytopenia (12.6 %). All were anemic, mean Hb 10.4+2.7 g%, mean ferritin 7.8+3.7 ng/ml, platelet range 12,000-95,000/mm3, mean 50,000+27,392/mm3. Each patient was treated with FBC 3 tablets a day while prednisolone 12 tablets a day were added only for 4 patients who had platelets <30,000/mm3. At the end of the second month of treatment, Hb was raised to 12.4+2.4 g% (p 0.024) and the platelet count to 118,461+105,021/mm3 (p 0.032) Conclusion: Thrombocytopenia in iron deficiency anemia in Thais is more common than in the westerners. It is mostly not severe enough to produce the bleeding symptom and becomes normal after FBC treatment.
