Abstract

Objectives: To find out the rate and the related factors of the complication after bladder investigations amongneurogenic bladder patients at orthopedic-rehabilitation II ward of Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. Patients& Method: This cross-sectional retrospective study was a review of admission documents from 1st October 2008 to 30th September 20010 in 132 neurogenic bladder patients at Orthopedic-Rehabilitation II ward of MaharatNakhon Ratchasima Hospital. Results: There were 111 male patients (84.1%) with age range of 13-74 years old. Most common cause of neurogenic bladder was traumatic spinal cord injury (73.1%) at the thoracic level (40.9%).The patients voiding cystourethrography (VCUG), urodynamic study and intravenous pyelography (IVP) wereperformed in 91 (68.9%), 86 (65.2%) and 41 cases (31.1%) respectively. The complications including urinarytract infection, hematuria, kidney impairment and urinary bladder rupture, occurred in 16 cases (17.4%) afterVCUG, and 6 cases (6.8%) after urodynamic study but no complication after IVP was performed. The intrinsicfactor of neurogenic bladder patients which related to the complication after VCUG was the vesicoureteral reflux(p-value=0.05) Conclusions: The rate of complications after bladder investigations depended on the investigationmethods and intrinsic factor of the patients. The rate of complication was highest in VCUG and followed byurodynamic study. However, there was no complication found in IVP. The intrinsic factor among neurogenicbladder patients that related to the complication after bladder investigations was vesicoureteric reflux.
