Abstract
Objective: To study the endometrial histopathology of postmenopausal women who presented with postmenopausalbleeding at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital and to compare the endometrial histopathology among differentage groups. Patients & Method: This is a retrospective hospital-based descriptive study. The data were collectedfrom medical records of postmenopausal bleeding women who attended the gynecological clinic, Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital between October 2008 and September 2011. The baseline characters such as, age at menopause, age at postmenopausal bleeding, history of use of hormonal replacement therapy and histopathological reports werecollected. The data were analyzed to identify causes of bleeding according to the age group of postmenopausalbleeding. Results: Four hundred and seventy - nine patients with the mean age at menopausal was 49.7±4.3 years andthe mean age at postmenopausal bleeding of 53.8±9.3 years, were recruited in the study. The patients’ ages rangedfrom 41 to 87 years with the majority (30.5%) between 50-54 years of age. The histopathological reports were foundto be atrophic endometrium of 31.5%, endometrial carcinoma of 13.6% and hyperplasia of 8.6%. And the endometrialcarcinoma was most commonly found in the age group of 60-64 years. Conclusion: The common cause ofpostmenopausal bleeding according to histopathological reports at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital was atrophicendometrium. Endometrial carcinoma was found in 13.6% and was more highly prevalent in advancing age group.
