Eye Injuries in Out-patient Ophthalmologic Service of Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital

Abstract

          Aim: To study the epidemiological data of the patients with eye injuries who visited the out-patient Ophthalmologic service of Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital from October 2006 to September 2008. Patients & Method: This study included sex, occupation, the cause of eye injury, the location of accident, the affected part of eye injury, the interval from accident to visit, the visual, the visual acuity before treatment and the final diagnosis. Results: From total of 405 patients, 305 (75.31%) were male and the injuries most frequently occurred in the age group of 31-40 years ie. 77 cases (19.01%). Of total cases, 228 (56.30%) were employees, 176 (43.46%) eye injuries occurred during their work, 349 (84.30%) injuries involved the anterior segment of eyes and 67 (16.53%) of total cases were blindness as the final result of injuries. Conclusion: This article showed the burden and the epidemiology of eye injuries in Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital which were similar to those of other areas. Because of the impact of injuries affecting the patients’ lives, the future researches should address the detail of the injury, the mechanism, risk factors and the prevention of injury.
