Ulcerative Colitis in Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital

Abstract

          Ulcerative colitis (UC) is uncommonly in Thailand and was reported from Bangkok. Objective: To study about UC in Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. Patients and Methods: Retrospective data in patients with UC in Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital between August 2000 to March 2008. All case had clinical spectrum compatible with UC and were done colonoscopy. Results: Thirteen UC patients were found and most of them were female (61.5%). Their had mean age at diagnosis 48.2±0.4 years old (range 35-61 years old), mean duration of follow up 42.2±26.7 months (median 53 months), mean duration of disease before establishing diagnosis 18.5±16.8 months (median 13 months), no history of smoking, all of them stay in Nakhon Ratchasima province and most of them (61.5%) were agriculturist. Clinical presentation was mucus-bloody diarrhea 100%, anemia 23.1% and weight loss 15.4%. Colonoscopic findings were left side disease 84.6% without terminal ileal involvement and most of them (84.6%)  had moderately severity. Their maintenance treatment was sulfazalazine only 53.8%, combination with sulfazalazine and azathiopine 23.1% and azathiopine only 15.4%. Only one patient could be stopped treatment. Conclusion: In seven and a half years of this study in Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital had 13 UC patients. Their had mostly female, mean age at diagnosis 48.2 years old, median duration of disease before establishing diagnosis 13 months, mostly agriculturist and no smoking habit. All presentation was mucus-bloody diarrhea. Location of disease involvement by colonoscopy was mainly in left side with terminal ileal involvement and moderately severity.
