Ectopic Pregnancy at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital

Abstract
Objective: To assess the ratio of ectopic pregnancies per deliveries at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. Patients & Methods: A retrospective medical record review of ectopic pregnancy cases diagnosed and treated at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital from 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2006 was conducted. Results: During the study period, there were 41,018 deliveries and 526 ectopic pregnancy cases treated at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. The ratio of ectopic pregnancies was 12.8 per 1,000 deliveries or 1 : 78 deliveries. The mean age of the patients was 27.2 years. The majority of the patients (39.9%) were farmers who lived in Nakhon Ratchasima province (93.9%). The most common presenting symptom was pelvic pain (85.0%). Some of patients (27.0%) showed vaginal bleeding. Clinical examination showed 15.6% of hypovolemic shock. Almost all patients (96.0%) had abnormal ultrasonographic findings. The most common type of ectopic pregnancy was tubal pregnancy (99.6%). The most common part of tubal pregnancy is ampulla part (52.5%). The most operative procedure was explored laparotomy salpingectomy (96.2%). Conclusions: Ectopic pregnancy is an important complication in pregnant women at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital and the ratio of ectopic pregnancies was 1 per 78 deliveries.
