Tic Disorders in Thai Children

Abstract

One hundred and fifty three patients with the diagnosis of Tic Disorders based on Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 4th edition (DSM IV) were reviewed. They were the new cases admitted at child and adolescent clinic, Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health between 1988 - 1999. The study found that male to female ratio was 5 to 1. Positive family history of tic disorders was present 9.8 percent of cases especially in Tourette’s disorders. The common types are transient, chronic, tic disorders and Guille de la Tourette disorder 37.9, 34.6, and 27.5 percent respectively, Facial ties was the most common presentation followed by neck and shoulder tics. Learning, emotional and behavioral problems were present in all types of Tic disorders. Attention deficit, hyperactivity disorders and emotional problems were the most common co-morbidity association with this disorders.
