Effectiveness and Complications of Lithotripsy under Ureterorenoscopy at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital: One Year Experience

Abstract
Introduction: There are many methods for ureteral calculi Management such as ureterolithotomy, shock wave lithotripsy, and lithotripsy under ureterorenoscopy.
Objective: To study the results and complications of lithotripsy under ureterorenoscopy at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital.
Patients and Method: Retrospective study was conducted from 95 medical records of patients who underwent lithotripsy under ureterorenoscopy from July 2001 to June 2002.
Results: Of 95 patients with ureteric calculi, 36 males and 59 females, 18-85 year of age (mean 40.8 ± 6.2 years) were enrolled in the study. All patients were treated with pneumatic lithoclast lithotripter under ureterorenoscopy. Stone free rate after first lithotripsy was about 87% (83 patients). Complications included 2 ureteral perforations, 5 ureteral mucosal injuries, 3 pyelonephritis, and 2 severe ureteral colicky pain.
Conclusion: Lithotripsy under ureterorenoscopy had yielded a good result, low complication rate and low cost, it should be an alternative method for ureteral calculi management.
