Causes of Death of Inpatients, Department of Surgery, Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital

Abstract

Introduction: According to hospital accreditation. Department of Surgery, Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima hospital is a part that needs to be improved. The Department also plays an important role in training medical personnel and caring tertiary level patients. Objective: To study the baseline data of causes of death in surgical patients. Materials and method: Descriptive study was performed in inpatient dead cases of the Department of Surgery Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima hospital during February 1 and March 31, 2000. The data was analyzed in term of sex, age unit of care, length of stay, diagnosis, operation, complications and causes of death. The data was presented by frequency/percent. Results and discussion: The study revealed inpatient dead cases at the Department of Surgery were male in the majority, emergency disease and traffic accident were the most common causes, and pneumonia was the most common complication. Exploratory laparotomy and craniotomy were common operation in dead cases. Conclusion: This data is useful for improving quality care and decreasing the complications.
