THE EFFECT OF HYPERTENSION IN PREGNANCY ON BIRTHWEIGHT

Abstract
Three hundred live births from hypertensive mother were studied in Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital between January 1992 and December 1994 in order to assess the effect of maternal hypertensive disorder on the birth weight of newborn infants. Of the 286 singleton live birth, 64 (22.4%) were low birth weight (LBW), 27 (9.4%) were large for gestational age (LGA), 210 (73.4%) were appropriate for gestational age (SGA), and 44 (15.4%) were small for gestationd age (SGA). Ten were preterm SGA and 34 were term SGA. The SGA were found 9.3% in mother with blood pressure less than 160/110 mm. Hg. compared with 23.4% in mother with blood pressure of 160/110 mm. Hg. or higher and 13.3% in mother with proteinuria less than 2 plus compared with 28.1% in mother with proteinuria 2 plus or more. It was concluded that hypertension and proteinuria are statistically associated with the incidence of SGA (p<0.002) and (p<0.006) respectively, and SGA could be found up to 32.7% in mother with blood pressure 160/110 mm. Hg. or higher with proteinuria 2 plus or more.
