This quasi-experimental study using a two-group pretest–posttest design aimed to examine the effects of a self-management program on blood glucose control behaviors among patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus. The sample consisted of 60 participants, equally assigned to an experimental group and a control group, with 30 participants in each group selected through purposive sampling. The self-management program was developed based on the 5A’s model, including assessment, advice, agree, assist, and arrange, and was implemented over a 12-week period. The research instruments consisted of a demographic questionnaire and a self-management behavior questionnaire. The instruments were validated for content validity by three experts, yielding an Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) ranging from 0.67 to 1.00. The feasibility of the self-management program was rated at a high level ( = 4.43), and the questionnaire demonstrated good reliability with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .87. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests.
The results revealed that, after participating in the program, the experimental group showed significantly higher self-management behavior scores (p < .001; = 4.32, SD = 0.28), while blood glucose levels and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels significantly decreased (p < .001;
= 139.97, SD = 27.01 and = 7.24, SD = 0.97, respectively). In contrast, the control group showed no statistically significant differences (p = .371, .592, and .781, respectively). Before the intervention, there were no statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups (p = .867, .783, and .079, respectively). However, after the intervention, the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher self-management behavior scores and significantly lower blood glucose and HbA1c levels than the control group (p = .017 and p < .001, respectively).
