Comparison of effectiveness of alternate applications of 2 single drug (1% Tropicamide and 10% Phenylephrine) versus mixed drug applications containing (1% Tropicamide และ 2.5% Phenylephrine) for pupils dilatation before cataract surgery

Abstract

This experimental research was to compare the effectiveness of pupils dilating drops between using single drug (1% Tropicamide alternating with 10% Phenylephrine) and combined medicine (1% Tropicamide and 2.5% Phenylephrine) for preparing patients before cataract surgery. The sample group consisted of 60 patients preparing for cataract surgery, divided into a control group consisting of 30 people were received alternating 2 types of single medicine (1% Tropicamide alternating with 10% Phenylephrine), and an experimental group consisting of 30 people that received a mixture of drugs (1% Tropicamide and 2.5% Phenylephrine). The research tools were interviews and data recording forms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square-test and independent t – test.

The results showed that the experimental group after receiving the combined medicine (1% Tropicamide and 2.5% Phenylephrine) had pupils dilation that were not significantly different from the control group using the single drug (1% Tropicamide alternating with 10% Phenylephrine). Statistically, p > 0.05 for both the experimental group and the control group after receiving the 5th round of medication, the pupils dilated 8 millimeters, 100 %, and after instilling 6 times, the experimental group took 50 minutes, the control group took 80 minutes.
