Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to study factors related to breast self-examination behavior among women aged 30-70 years. A sample of 368 people was obtained using simple random sampling, with the sample size determined using the Krejcie-Morgan table. The research instrument was a questionnaire with the following reliability coefficients: knowledge about breast cancer (KR-20 = 0.79), attitude towards breast self-examination (0.79), social support (0.87), and breast self-examination behavior (0.85). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Fisher's Exact Test. The results showed that the majority of the sample were aged 30-39 years (41.6%), married (54.9%), held a bachelor's degree (45.7%), and were employed in the civil service (28.5%). 76.6% had a good level of knowledge about breast cancer, 84.0% had a good attitude towards breast self-examination, and received support from the media. Public health officials and village health volunteers (VHVs) accounted for 71.2%, 61.4%, and 47.3%, respectively, of breast self-examination. Social support from family and friends was moderate, at 43.8% and 42.2%, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed that personal factors, including age, marital status, education level, and occupation, were significantly correlated with breast self-examination behavior (p < 0.05). Knowledge and attitudes were not correlated with breast self-examination behavior. Social support, including support from various media, public health officials, VHVs, friends, and family members, was significantly correlated with breast self-examination behavior (p < 0.001). The study concludes that social support is the most important factor in promoting breast self-examination behavior. Knowledge and attitudes alone are insufficient for behavioral change. Therefore, promoting breast self-examination behavior requires building a comprehensive social support system for maximum effectiveness.
