The Effectiveness of Using SBAR Communication Program at Phaholpolpayuhasena Hospital (Phahol Electronic SBAR)

Abstract

Objective: To compare the times for nursing shift reports and the incident of errors or mistakes event before and after using the SBAR program.

Methodology: This quasi-experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design was conducted at a medical ward of Phaholpolpayuhasena Hospital between 1 June 2023 and 30 November 2023. Twenty nurses who had experienced at least two years working on the ward were purposively sampling for the study.  Time for nursing shift reports, data of errors or mistakes event (level C or above) before and after using the program were recorded. The nurse’s satisfaction with the program was also assessed. Data were analyzed by using descriptives statistics, paired t-test, and incidence rate ratio

Result: The mean time for nursing shift reports was lower after using the program (191.50+128.44 vs. 174.00+117.03 min; p=0.046). The incident of errors or mistakes event was also lower after using the program (16.06 vs. 0.79 per 1,000 patient-days; p<0.001).

Conclusion: The SBAR program improves nursing team communication and reduces time for nursing shift reports leading to promotes patient safety in the medical ward.
