Abstract

Objective: To examine the effects of an aerobic dance exercise self-management program on blood pressure control among people with uncontrolled hypertension.

Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a two-group pretest-posttest design was conducted. The sample consisted of 42 older adults with uncontrolled high blood pressure, 21 people per group, selected into groups by matching and simple random sampling. The intervention group received a 12-week aerobic dance exercise self-management program consisting of educational activities, self-monitoring, motivational support, and aerobic dance exercise five times a week for 30minutes each time. The control group received standard care. Data were collected using a blood pressure monitor, a weight scale, and a height measuring device. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the t-test.

Results: After the experiment, it was found that the mean systolic blood pressure of the experimental group was significantly lower than the control group (130.38±7.40 and 142.10±9.20, p<0.001), and the mean diastolic blood pressure of the experimental group was significantly lower than the control group (84.70±5.10 and 90.20±5.50, p<0.001). The mean body mass index of the experimental group was also lower than the control group, but there was no statistically significant difference (23.95±4.80 and 24.20±5.10, p=0.810).

Conclusion: The aerobic dance exercise self-management program effectively reduced blood pressure among patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Therefore, this program should be implemented in hypertension clinics to enhance blood pressure control, along with dietary modification and long-term follow-up.
