The Effect of Balance Training on Functional Abilities in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis in Krathumbaen Hospital
Keywords:

Objective: To study the level of balance ability, functional abilities compared before and after participating in the balance training exercise programs using the Four-Square board and user satisfaction among patients with knee osteoarthritis in Krathumbaen Hospital
Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a single-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of patients with knee OA who received treatment at physical therapy department. Participants engaged in balance training exercise program with the Four-Square board for 8 weeks. Balance ability and mobility were assessed using the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), respectively, before and after the intervention. Program satisfaction was evaluated upon completion. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
Results: The sample comprised 14 female participants. Following the intervention, balance ability showed a statistically significant improvement (TUGT: 9.47±1.36 vs. 12.21±2.49 seconds; p<0.001). Furthermore, mobility significantly improved in 4 out of 5 KOOS subscales: pain, other symptoms, activities of daily living (ADL), and knee-related quality of life (p<0.001, p=0.002, p=0.001 and p=0.009, respectively). Additionally, satisfaction with the program was rated at the highest level (98.57%).
Conclusion: The Four-Square Step Exercise program effectively enhances balance and mobility in patients with knee osteoarthritis and is highly applicable in clinical physical therapy settings. Future research should incorporate a larger sample size, a control group, and long-term follow-up to further validate the program's efficacy.
