The Effects of Video Media on Preparation of Patients for OneDay Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Phahol Pre-Anesthetic Clinic Phaholpolphayuhasena Hospital, Kanchanaburi Province

Abstract

Objectives: To study the effect of using video media on the preparation of patients receiving anesthesia for oneday surgery and minimally invasive surgery at the pre-anesthetic clinic.

Methods: The quasi-experimental research with two groups of pre-experimental and post-experimental design was conducted between June and August 2023. One hundred patients were included by purposive sampling and divided equally into two groups. The control group receivedstandard pre-operative information by nurse anesthetists whereas the experimental group received standard information plus video media. Patient’s knowledge was assessed using a self-report questionnaire at the pre-operative clinic for baseline and again on the day of surgery. The number of surgical cancelations or postponements was also recorded.Within the groups data were analyzedusing descriptive statistics and paired t-test and between the groups using independent t-test. 

Results: The mean score of patient knowledge in both groups was significantly higher than baseline. In the control group, the baseline and after-experimental mean scores were 13.80±1.49 and 16.44±1.31 (p<0.001).For the experimental group, the baseline and after-experimental mean scores were 14.56+3.03 and 19.56+1.85 (p<0.001) which was higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p<0.001).

Conclusions: Using video media, repeatedly playedon a smartphone, forpatientpreparation to receive anesthesia and one-day surgery or minimally invasive surgery at the preoperative patient assessment clinic was able to increasepre-operative patient knowledge and reduced surgical cancellation due to patient's improper conditions. Therefore, video media should be an alternative for patient education before anesthesia and surgery.
