Results of Applying Nursing Protocol for Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) in Intensive Care Unit, Phaholpolpayuhasena Hospital

Objective: To study the results of applying nursing protocol for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methodology: This quasi-experimental research with pretest-posttest design was conducted in the medical intensive care unit (ICU) at Phaholpolpayuhasena Hospital between 1 August 2023 and 31 December 2023. Twelve nurses who working in the ICU were enrolled into the study. Eighty patients scheduled for PCI were purposively randomized into control and study groups equally. Research tools were nursing protocol for patients undergoing PCI and self-report questionnaires for evaluation of nurse practices. Data were analyzed using frequency, mean, percentage, standard deviation, paired t - test and Independent T-test.
Results: Two days after the experiment, nursing practice scores for caring PCI patients was higher than the baseline (7.00+1.90 vs 7.58+0.79; p < 0.001). The incidence of subcutaneous hematoma in the study group was lower than those in the control group (1.17+0.38 vs 1.05+0.22; p = 0.04).
Conclusions: Nursing guidelines for PCI patients developed by the researchers was successful applied in the medical intensive care unit especially for patient safety aspect.
