Factors Affecting Osteoporosis Risk among Middle-Aged Health Personnel in Provincial Health Offices, Health Region 10

Background: Osteoporosis is a significant public health problem among middle-aged populations, particularly health personnel with prolonged sedentary work. The Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA) provides a practical screening approach for resource-limited settings.
Objective: To assess osteoporosis risk levels and analyze associated factors among middle-aged health personnel in provincial health offices, Health Region 10.
Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 337 personnel aged 40–59 years from five provincial health offices, selected by proportional stratified random sampling .Osteoporosis risk was assessed using the Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA index) = [0.2 × (weight – age)], dichotomized into low-risk and moderate-risk groups. Multiple logistic regression with Ridge regularization was used to identify associated factors. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results: Most participants were female (71.2%), with a median age of 46 years (IQR 11). The majority (84.9%) were classified as low risk and 15.1% as moderate risk; no high-risk cases were identified. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed no statistically significant associations (p > 0.05). Tea consumption showed the strongest trend (Adjusted OR = 1.31, 95%CI = 0.97–1.75, p = 0.093).
Conclusion: The majority of middle-aged health personnel in Health Region 10 were at low osteoporosis risk. Findings provide important baseline data for bone health surveillance planning. Future studies using DEXA scan or Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry as outcome measure and larger sample sizes are warranted.
