Abstract

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common postoperative complication among patients undergoing abdominal surgery. DVT typically occurs within the first 48 hours after surgery and is often asymptomatic. Factors associated with the development of DVT include both patient-related and care-related factors. Therefore, this study aims to develop and apply nursing practice guidelines for the prevention of DVT in patients with gastrointestinal cancer undergoing abdominal surgery. The guidelines were developed through a comprehensive review of literature from reliable databases and synthesized into the SAFE model, which consists of S-Surveillance and Risk Assessment, A-Active Mobility & Mechanical Prophylaxis, F-Pharmacological Management, and E-Effective Team Collaboration. Content validity was assessed by five experts, yielding a CVI of 1.0. The guideline was subsequently revised based on expert recommendations and applied in two case studies. The results demonstrated that neither patient developed DVT postoperatively, with 100 percent adherence to the guideline. Therefore, the nursing practice guideline should be applied in clinical settings.

Dr. Parichat Wonggom is a middle clinician and early-career researcher. She completed her Ph.D. in Nursing from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Flinders University, Australia in 2019. Her study focused on avatar-based application technology of patient education tool for improving heart failure patients’ knowledge and self-care behaviours. She was invited to provide an oral presentation in the Nursing Investigator Award Prize Session in the Heart Failure Meeting in Athens, Greece in May 2019. Since 2010, Dr. Wonggom has been working at Department of Adult Nursing, Faculty of Nursing, Khon Kaen University. Her professional experiences include work with cardiovascular diseases, perioperative care and gastrointestinal diseases. Her current research makes use of randomize controlled trials and systematic reviews that focus on cardiovascular diseases, heart failure, perioperative care, gastrointestinal diseases and information technology in patient education. Dr. Wonggom has demonstrated a commitment to establishing her research in the literature, with publications in high-ranking journals such as the Journal of Advanced Nursing, Current Heart Failure Reports, Heart, Lung and Circulation and JBI Evidence Synthesis. Her works have been presented at a national and international research conferences and she has also received travel fundings and publication awards. She has been invited as a peer reviewer for international and national journals. In 2020, her research project was financially supported by the Young Researcher Development Project of Khon Kaen University.
