E, Effects of Self-Management Program Combined with Tele-nursing for Stroke Prevention among Uncontrolled Hypertensive Patients in Yasothon Province

Abstract

Abstract

A quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest–posttest approach was employed. The objectives were to: (1) compare the self-management behaviors for stroke prevention and the Thai risk score before and after participation in self-management program within the experimental group, and between the experimental and comparison groups after participation in the program; and (2) compare blood pressure before and after participation in the program within the experimental group, and between the experimental and comparison groups after participation in the program.

The sample consisted of 62 patients with uncontrolled hypertension aged 35–65 years. The research instruments included two components: 1) a self-management program combined with tele-nursing for stroke prevention in patients with uncontrolled hypertension, adapted from Creer’s self-management theory (2000), conducted over an eight-week period; and 2) a set of questionnaires comprising (1) a general information and (2) a stroke-preventive self-management behavior assessment. The content validity index of the questionnaire was 0.96, and its reliability, determined by Cronbach’s alpha was 0.83. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and t-test.

The results revealed that after participating in the program, the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher mean scores of self-management behaviors for stroke prevention compared with before participation and significantly higher than those of the comparison group. Furthermore, the experimental group showed statistically significant reductions in cardiovascular disease risk and systolic blood pressure compared with pre-intervention values.
